FOCUS ON PARTNER PROJECTS

NSW Global Scope: Offering WIL opportunities to international students

Intersective

Jointly delivered by StudyNSW and Intersective, a Sydney-based education services and technology start-up, NSW Global Scope offers Work Integrated Learning experience to almost 200 international students.

The program matches teams of students to business projects provided by government departments, businesses, and NGOs, and is facilitated by an online ‘project learning’ platform which offers learning content, project management and collaboration functionality.

The projects have a strong digital focus ranging from researching social media and brand strategies, website analysis, product assessment and customer research.

The success of this Partner Project will make it scalable to over 1000 students in 2017.

The International Hub: Referral service for international student health and wellbeing programs in New England

University of New England

From free English language lessons to fortnightly meetings for The International Ladies group to a Positive Parenting Program, the University of New England’s International Hub was successfully established in July 2016 to engage international students and their families with the local New England community, in partnership with Bupa and StudyNSW.

Mrs Dunya Alruhaimi - a winner of the 2015 NSW International Student of the Year Award – manages the Hub on behalf of UNE.

As a regional community, UNE hopes implemented the initiative to help international students and their families adjust to life in Armidale, as well as Australia more broadly.

Redfern Legal Centre

International Student Legal Service

A StudyNSW-sponsored report in 2015 estimated that at least 40,000 international students in NSW were not receiving assistance for legal issues. This can have serious consequences for their education, residency and enjoyment of their time in Australia.

Continuing into 2017, the Redfern Legal Centre – supported by StudyNSW as a Partner Project – delivers a free legal advice service for all international students in NSW. The service is of critical importance for many international students for whom legal advice is not readily accessible or affordable.

In addition to the legal advice service, Redfern Legal Centre is actively engaging with international students through forums, social media, the creation of fact sheets and other avenues to raise awareness about their legal rights and responsibilities.

International Student Employability: Employer Forum

The NSW National Association of Graduate Career Advisory Services

In September 2016, international students were offered the phenomenal opportunity to attend a forum designed to enhance employability through exposure to employers and information on work experience, recruitment and networking opportunities.

Funded by StudyNSW’s Partner Project program, the National Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Service brought together 7 NSW universities to coordinate the inaugural International Student Employability Forum for over 1,000 international students.

In addition to engaging with employers one-on-one, students were invited to attend keynote addresses as well as expert speaker panels including tips from successful students.

The Biggest English Lesson

English Australia

For the first time in history on Friday 12 February, educational institutions, language colleges, and international students came together at Sydney’s Bondi Beach to set a world record for the largest English lesson delivered simultaneously in one location.

3000 international students from over 50 different countries gathered at the iconic Sydney location on Friday evening to take part in the event. The hour long lesson was led by Australia’s leading English Language Colleges and educational institutes, and was followed by a live band.

This event was truly unique in that students were encouraged to practise their English by the ocean, meet new people, enjoy the sunset at Bondi Beach to the sound of live music and make history in a fun environment.
